Once the dead end of town, Sheung Wan on Hong Kong Island has stepped into the it-right-now limelight. In the process of avoiding Central’s exorbitant rents, Manhattan-worthy bars and restaurants, artisan shops and design studios have created a hands-down better alternative. For the hipsters in Hong Kong, this is party headquarters.

Adding to the intrigue, the precinct’s mess of steeply sloping roads and cobbled laneways are home to pockets of low-rise terraces, vertiginous residential blocks, temples and colonial buildings. It’s a great place to get lost. If you have time, keep walking beyond Sheung Wan into Sai Ying Pun, which has similar charm and is touted as the next hip hot spot.
